B-SIDE

Portland Bill Nature Map

This illustrated map was created for the b-side ‘This Land’ Festival, celebrating the rich history, geology, and natural environment of Portland Bill. Designed to connect visitors with Portland’s unique landscape, the map highlights key wildlife species, referencing data from local wildlife organisations like the Portland Bill Bird Observatory and Protect Portland Bill's recorded sightings. Alongside showcasing notable landmarks, like Portland Bill Lighthouse and Pulpit Rock, are walking trails, and open-access areas. With potential for further development into an interactive digital map and a companion flora and fauna guidebook, this piece serves as both a keepsake poster and an educational resource for the festival.

Commissioned by b-side for This Land Festive 2023 , made possible thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Natural England.

Whimbrel
Portland Sea Lavendar

Did you know the Isle of Portland is home to a very rare species of wild flower? The Portland Sea Lavender can only be found on the small stretch of limestone coastline in Dorset, and although similiar to the Rock Sea Lavender they have a very fancy curved flower head which sets them apart.

Spot them blooming on the Isle of Portland from July to September on limestone cliffs and rock ledges
