Handpainted Mural

BAYS BREWERY, DEVON

I designed and handpainted a bespoke illustrated mural for Bays Brewery in Paignton, Devon, capturing the brewery’s craft beer process in a creative, infographic-style artwork. The mural tells the story of their locally brewed ales and beers — from carefully sourced ingredients to the finished pint (or bottle). Situated in the heart of the brewery’s onsite shop, the piece celebrates local craftsmanship and reflects the passion and heritage behind each brew.

This handpainted design combines visual storytelling and hand-rendered typography to create an engaging and informative experience for visitors.

Mural Inspiration

Behind the Mural:
The Creative Process

Designing the mural for the brewery was a collaborative process, made easy by a clear brief that included inspiration images and detailed wall measurements. From the start, it was important to create artwork that not only fitted the unique shape of the space but also showcased the brewing process, iconic Bays locations, and their product range.

The project kicked off with a call and a virtual ‘site visit’ to discuss the get a feel for the space and its surroundings. Back in the studio, I developed concept sketches and colour options, working closely with the brewery team to ensure the design aligned with their vision.

Once the final design was approved, I scaled it up for the wall and spent two days on site bringing it to life:

  • Day One: Chalked up the design and painted the main outlines of the illustrations.

  • Day Two: Added finer details and hand-painted all the accompanying text.
